Το διασημότερο γκρουπ στην ιστορία της μουσικής. Οι Beatles είναι αυτοί που πρώτοι παρουσίασαν το πλέον αντιγραμμένο στα 60s και 70s στιλ, με σύνθεση από δύο κιθάρες, μπάσο και τύμπανα και ερμηνεία δικών τους τραγουδιών, σε αντίθεση με τους παλαιότερους, οι οποίοι απλώς τραγουδούσαν δημιουργίες άλλων. Στηριγμένα στην κλασική πλέον τραγουδοποιία των Lennon και McCartney, τα κομμάτια τους κατέκτησαν την τελειότητα σε ό,τι αφορούσε τη βασισμένη στις αρμονίες pop, την οποία ανήγαγαν σε αυτόνομη και αυτοτελή μορφή τέχνης. Σχηματίστηκαν στο Λίβερπουλ το 1959 και η αρχική τους σύνθεση περιλάμβανε τους John Lennon (rhythm κιθάρα), Paul McCartney (μπάσο), George Harrison (lead κιθάρα) και Pete Best (τύμπανα).
Το πρώιμο ρεπερτόριό τους στηριζόταν σε διασκευές αμερικανικών R and B κομματιών των Chuck Berry και Little Richard. Μέχρι το 1962 είχαν αλλάξει ντράμερ (στρατολογώντας τον Ringo Starr), είχαν προσλάβει ως μάνατζερ τον Brian Epstein και πλέον κυκλοφορούσαν το ιστορικό σινγκλ "Love Me Do" με παραγωγό τον George Martin, που σύντομα θα απολάμβανε τη φήμη του "πέμπτου Beatle".
Καθιέρωσαν το image με το ιδιαίτερο κούρεμά τους και τα σακάκια δίχως κολάρο, ενώ το "She Loves You" έγινε το σινγκλ με τις μεγαλύτερες πωλήσεις στην ιστορία της Βρετανίας. Με την κυκλοφορία του πρώτου τους άλμπουμ, "With The Beatles" άρχισαν να χρησιμοποιούνται όροι όπως "merseybeat" (για τη μουσική τους) και "Beatlemania" (για την υστερία που προκαλούσαν, ειδικά στο γυναικείο πληθυσμό).
Έδωσαν συναυλίες στα μεγάλα κλαμπ του Λονδίνου (Palladium, Royal Albert Hall), εμφανίστηκαν στο εθνικό τηλεοπτικό δίκτυο και το Νοέμβριο του '63 έπαιξαν για τη βασίλισσα, όντας πλέον αποδεκτοί από το κατεστημένο και έχοντας γεφυρώσει το "χάσμα των γενεών". Ενώ κορίτσια λιποθυμούσαν στα αεροδρόμια, εκείνοι κατακτούσαν τη Σουηδία και τη Γαλλία. Στο Παρίσι, τον Ιανουάριο του '64, πληροφορήθηκαν ότι είναι νούμερο ένα στην Αμερική. Ταξίδεψαν στις ΗΠΑ.
Η εμφάνιση στο τηλεοπτικό σόου του Ed Sullivan σημείωσε ρεκόρ τηλεθέασης. Επέστρεψαν στο Λονδίνο, όπου τους αποδόθηκαν τιμές ηρώων, έχοντας ανοίξει το δρόμο για τη "βρετανική εισβολή", όπως ονομάστηκε η επιτυχία των βρετανικών συγκροτημάτων στα αμερικανικά τσαρτ που ακολούθησε την επίσκεψή τους στην άλλη πλευρά του Ατλαντικού. Τον Ιούλιο του '64 έκανε πρεμιέρα το πρώτο τους φιλμ "A Hard Day's Night" σε σκηνοθεσία Richard Lester και σύντομα ήρθε η δεύτερη ταινία τους, "Help", αυτή τη φορά σε Technicolor. Ο Paul έγραψε το "Yesterday".
Στο Μπάκιγχαμ παρασημοφορήθηκαν από τη βασίλισσα.
Στη Νέα Υόρκη, τον Αύγουστο του 1965, ήταν το πρώτο γκρουπ που έπαιξε σε στάδιο μπέιζμπoλ. Σταδιακά άρχισαν την παραγωγή πιο περιπετειώδους μουσικής, που οδήγησε σε δίσκους όπως τα "Rubber Soul" και "Revolver". Ο Harrison πειρματίστηκε για πρώτη φορά με το ινδικό έγχορδο σιτάρ στο "Norwegian Wood". Το καλοκαίρι του 1966 ο Lennon δήλωσε σε τηλεοπτική συνέντευξη ότι οι Beatles είναι πιο διάσημοι από τον Ιησού, προκαλώντας γενική κατακραυγή, η οποία εντάθηκε όταν ο Paul παραδέχτηκε στην τηλεόραση ότι έχει κάνει χρήση LSD. Έδωσαν το τελευταίο κοντσέρτο της καριέρας τους στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο. Ταξίδεψαν στο Αιγαίο για την αγορά ενός νησιού, η οποία τελικά δεν πραγματοποιήθηκε ποτέ.
Στη συνέχεια μπήκαν στη μεγάλη περιπέτεια του ηχητικού πειραματισμού με το "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" του 1967 - για πολλούς το καλύτερο άλμπουμ της pop και rock ιστορίας.
Στην καρδιά του "καλοκαιριού της αγάπης" και της flower-power κυκλοφόρησε το "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", ένα από τα σπουδαιότερα άλμπουμ της σύγχρονης ηλεκτρικής μουσικής. Μόλις δύο μέρες μετά την κυκλοφορία του ο Jimi Hendrix είχε ήδη εντρυφήσει στο ομότιτλο τραγούδι και ξεκίνησε με αυτό μια συναυλία του. Ο George Martin είπε για το δίσκο αυτό: "Νομίζω ότι αντιπροσώπευε όλα όσα απασχολούσαν τη νεολαία τότε, συμπεριλαμβάνοντας τις μίνι φούστες και τα soft drug. Ήταν μια επιτομή των swinging 60s". Στις 25 Ιουνίου 1967, στην πρώτη παγκόσμια ταυτόχρονη μετάδοση μέσω δορυφόρου, τραγούδησαν το "All You Need Is Love" σε 200 εκατομμύρια ανθρώπους. Ήταν μια από τις πιο ιστορικές και συναισθηματικά ισχυρές στιγμές στην πορεία της pop μουσικής.
Αμέσως μετά τον αιφνίδιο θάνατο του μάνατζέρ τους, Brian Epstein, γνώρισαν τον Maharashi Mahesh Yogi και ενσωμάτωσαν στη μουσική τους στοιχεία των ανατολικών φιλοσοφιών.
Τρέφοντας ιδιαίτερα φιλόδοξα σχέδια, ίδρυσαν την εταιρεία Apple, η οποία στέγαζε επιχειρηματικά όλες τις δραστηριότητές τους, όχι πάντα με επιτυχία. Ετοιμάστηκε το επόμενο φιλμ τους, σε ύφος ντοκιμαντέρ (αν και σουρεαλιστικό), το "Magical Mystery Tour". "Ήταν μια εποχή υπέροχων ιδεών" αναπόλησε αργότερα ο Paul. Κυκλοφόρησε το τελευταίο τους φιλμ "Yellow Submarine". Ο John γνώρισε τη Yoko Ono, η οποία δεν ξεκολλούσε από κοντά του ούτε στις πρόβες, με αποτέλεσμα να δημιουργηθεί για πρώτη φορά ρήγμα στην ενότητα της παρέας. Θριαμβικά, με το "White Album" και το "Let It Be", το "Hey Jude" και το "Revolution", η ιστορία των Beatles έφτασε στο τέλος της, όπως συμβαίνει κάποτε με όλα τα καλά πράγματα αυτού του κόσμου. Οι "υπέροχοι τέσσερις" ακολούθησαν προσωπική καριέρα, ο καθένας με αρκετές αξιόλογες στιγμές, όμως ποτέ δεν πλησίασαν την ακεραιότητα του Beatle-ικού καλλιτεχνικού οράματος.
Το Δεκέμβριο του 1970 ο Paul ανακοίνωσε επίσημα την διάλυση του συγκροτήματος.
